As a child during the war, I was lucky enough to be given Goat’s milk. Some 40 goat’s were kept by an elderly lady living near Padstow in Cornwall. I loved and thrived on it. However the time came when the owner of the goats had to retire and I was then given cow’s milk. I remember asking my mother why I had been given goat’s milk, she informed me that I could not drink cows milk as a toddler.
Being a small child I did not ask any more questions. However, as I got a little older, about 6yrs, I developed Catarrh. My mother insisted on me having a good breakfast each day before I left for school, and every day, as I ran down the road to catch the bus, I started to cough and choke which made me lose my breakfast. It became part of my life! It only happened when I was rushing around, so it was not a daily occurrence, just enough to be a nuisance, it never occurred to me to tell my mother when I got home later that day from school, she would have been horrified that I had had to wait until lunchtime for food!
In 1956 we moved house to mid Cornwall where I thought being away from the sea would help my poor old blocked nose, as it did not help at all, I consulted another doctor. This time I was given a Nasal Spray and it helped for a time, I got married in 1959 and moved to Devon. I continued to use Nasal Spray for several years, finding it was not as effective for as long. Worried about how much I was inhaling, I stopped taking it altogether and continued to suffer. 1976 saw us living in West Yorkshire, nowhere near the sea and no improvement to my suffering. 1989 saw us in mid Wales, again a long way from the sea. I got a job involving 6am trips out in the morning, again I was pestered by the coughing, choking and eventual sickness.
One morning my husband suggested that perhaps the reason I had been put on Goat’s milk so many years ago was that I really was intolerant to cows milk. The next time I went to the supermarket I looked for Goat’s milk, they did not stock it at the time, so I went onto Soya milk, which I have to say is disgusting! Then one day, I found your goat’s milk, within six days of using it in all my drinks, Joy of joy I could breath. I have now been drinking it for some 13 years, and thankfully it has cleared up all my problems.
You may ask why I took so long to click onto the fact that it was the cow’s milk that I was alergic to all the time, but as a child I thought it was normal, if I asked anyone I was told it was the salt air! The other problem was that I was unable to obtain Goat’s milk, and there was not as much information about allergies as there is now.
Now, I am 72 years old, and feeling very much better. I can even have an occasional drink containing cow’s milk without it affecting me.
Thank you for looking after the goats, please keep their wonderful milk coming!
Regards
Rebecca Jones
